April 13th of every year is Thai new year according to ancient tradition. We have this custom for a thousand year since the beginning of our country. We call our Thai new year " Song- Gran Day"
If I'm telling you in detail of how it began, this might look more like a textbook than a diary. In order to explain the beliefs and customs that is a thousand year old, I will need a another place to tell. For this blog, I'll conclude it as:
Song-Gran Day is on April 13th of every year. It's a grand celebration and one of the most important day for Thai people. We normally perform merit, offer food to monks, and bless each others. Children normally prostrate themselves to elders and give them flower garland, which made from jasmines and other flowers. They also softly spring water, which mixed with Thai special fragrance, from a silver bowl, which has Thai painting on it. While doing so, children pray for Buddha to protect the elders and wish them a long lives, meanwhile, the elders bless children be healthy, smart, wealthy, and successful. On this day, people normally wear Thai traditional clothes or at least a colorful shirt, printed with colorful flowers.
After the ceremony with elders, Thai people with come out splashing water and putting powder on each others' face. We joyfully celebrate like this all 3 days (13-15 April)
The custom of splashing water to each other might come from the fact that Thai New Year takes place in the middle of April, which is the hottest month. (Thailand is a tropical country and this is the hottest time, people are normally dry after a little while)
Song-Gran Festival is not only Thai holidays and the most important tradition of Thailand, it is also one of the most famous festivals to foreigners. This time of every year, there will be many foreigners, who come to Thailand to enjoy the celebration in ChianMai province and Kao-San road in Bangkok.
But Song-Gran this year, Thailand is under State of Emergency. One of the rules is omitting a gathering of more than 5 people and now it's too early to know what is going on at Kao San road, which is supposed to be the fun area.
However, no matter how many days and years passed, or no matter what the situation in my country is, I'm still able to find happiness from my dogs and from realizing that I have a good family and good friends. Any awful political situations can not decrease the happiness in my heart. Therefore, my love and good wishes that I pass to all my friends are not less.
Thank you for friendship and sincerity you have given to me and my 2-legs and 4-legs family. Thank you for making my days that even one of the darkest days get brighter because of your friendship.
I would like to send love and good wishes to everyone in every corner of the world.
Happy Song Gran Day - Happy Thai New Year to you with love

I enjoy reading your diary everyday. It's nice and amazing!!
Wish you a truely Thai Happy New Year.
I want to pass this news to all my friends, who were worried about me and my family for the chaotic situation that was happening during the Thai New Year. The situation was resolved this afternoon. The military came out to pressure the mobs to dissolve, so the Mobs' leaders announced a stop of the protesting for the safety of the protesters. The Government provided buses to send the protesters back to their home towns in other provinces while the Mobs' leaders were captured for investigation.
The Government announced that this coming Friday and Saturday will be holidays in addition to the traditional holidays from the 13th to 15th. That means we will have a long 10-day vacation because the Government announced an early holiday that started on the 10th due to the unpeaceful situation. When you add the first weekend and the last weekend that makes 10 days. It is considered the longest Songkran holiday in history, but it is also the most unjoyful Songkran we ever had.
Even though the situation has calmed down and we still have many days to celebrate Songkran, we all know that this is only temporary peace. If the Government doesn't consider what the Mob requested (new elections and for the PM to resign) the Mob might start again because the problem hasn't been permanently solved. This might give some opportunities to the bad guy who lives abroad to incite more riots.
I do not like the protest . But, I think the request from the Mob is reasonable and they deserve to be heard by the Government.
I would like to thank my friends who shared their concerns and prayed for my family and my country. I believe that is one of the reasons the situation is better.
My husband is at home.My son is now out celebrating Songkran with his friends.
Dear Joom! We are truly happy for you, that the situation is resolved (for now)
And now we want to wish you and your family a very very happy New Year!!! Thank you for your updates and for sharing your life with us! Your Swedish friends for ever!

I wish I could experience Song Gran in Thailand one of these years... Thai culture is very important to me because I had such a great visit to your country...
Joom:
I heard about the news on Good Morning America a few days ago while I was getting ready for work. I felt my heart fall to the floor and worried sick for you and your family. I am happy to hear all is well, but sad your husband had to take part in the mob.
. May you enjoy you your long holiday ahead with your family and think of the present and not what is to come ahead. God will find away to work that out.
God Bless.
My husband sends his regards as well.
Michelle
Joom,
My husband wanted me to send this to you...he looked all over our home for his card he keeps thi on so here it is
LORD, GRANT ME THE SERENITY TO ACCEPT THE THINGS I CAN NOT CHANGE, THE COURAGE TO CHANGE THE THINGS I CAN, AND THE WISDOM TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE
I am happy to hear all is well. Hope happiness stays last long .Now I can say: Happy Songkran days to you!!! Enjoy the water and blessing!!
GOD BLESS THAILAND AND IT'S PEOPLE FOREVER.HAPPY SONGKRAN DAY TO YOU AND YOUR FAMILY JOOM.LOVE/MARGETA
My family and I are truly happy for you, that the situation is resolved.Hope only happiness comes to your door on Song Gran Days.
Thank you for sharing Thai New Year traditions with all of us, Joom!
You are so detailed in your writing that I can practically see the people sprinking water on each other, like a movie.
What I thought was most beautiful are the flower wreaths...those are incredible!!
In Cuba, we had a similar celebration with water; people would fill up a bucket of water and throw the water from their balconies into the middle of the street for good luck in the coming year. If you happened to be in the street and got wet, it wasn't so lucky for you!
Even if you didn't have a house with a balcony, you would still open the front door and splash the sidewalk, street, etc.
I read in a magazine about the Thai New Year's celebration years ago. The article stated that the Thai people do more than sprinkle water on each other...you use buckets sometimes, too!! It sounds like so much fun.
My wish for you this New Year is that Thailand's political troubles end. One thousand years of culture are too precious to diminish with civil war.
Diana
May I borrow a part of Diana's statments to say: One thousand years of culture are too precious to diminish with civil war.
Hope you spend Songkran day and enjoy more holidays.!!
Love,
Mary
My family and I are appreciated by your kind wishes.
Thank you with love from the bottom of our hearts.
